Bottom Land (Winter Grass), Oil on stretched canvas, 12″ by 24″. .
This painting shows the winter patterns of snow and open ground, light and shadow and dead grass in Grand Wash in Capitol Reef in January. I like the contrasts between dark and light and brown/yellow and blue/violet. I wanted to try to capture the visual impression of those contrasts using a loose, heavy brush and a total absence of detail and fine line, and try to engage the viewer in constructing the image without using a lot of busy brush work. I’ve been working on a couple of larger paintings of similar motifs that I’ll put up here when I’m a little farther along on them.
